Mode of action:
Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor. It inhibits secretion of acid by irreversibly blocking the enzyme system of hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase in gastric parietal cells.
Indications:
It is used in the treatment of Duodenal Ulcer, Gastric Ulcer, Reflux esophagitis, Resistant Ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and prevention of acid aspiration syndrome.
Dosage:
One capsule a day or as directed by the physician.
Drug interactions:
Omeprazole competes with other drugs for the subfamily 2C of the cytochrome P450 system. This reduces the rate of metabolism , phenytoin and warfarin resulting in an increase in the plasma drug level.
Adverse reactions:
Diarrhoea, skin rashes and headache are reported frequently. Other adverse effects reported rarely include myalgia, blood disorders including leucopenia and thrombocytopenia.
Important: Do not chew or crush the capsules. They should be swallowed whole with water.
